issue no. 9
I read an article this week about actor/rapper Mark Wahlberg who revealed his daily routine. He wakes up around 2:30am, meditates, prays and then follows a highly regimented day of physical activity, eating, work and relaxing activities that end around 7.30pm with him going to sleep.
I am a huge fan of morning routines. I’ve had one since I was a kid. It’s a non-negotiable in my life that I highly recommend for everyone. But reading his intense routine alone made me feel weak. Here are a few things that I took away from this article.
1. A strict daily routine based on your goals is certain to deliver results.
2. A well-thought-through routine is like a mentor guiding you through your day with focus and purpose. It can be your best friend.
3. You can be somewhat “average” in life, but through focused discipline you can achieve greatness, or at least significantly increase your chances of becoming great.
4. Few – if any – achieve enormous success without enormous sacrifice and REALLY hard work.
5. It can be lonely and feel unrewarding at times while you work at achieving your goals. Expect this.
6. A routine is something to look forward to, not dread, so tailor it to your specific needs and wants. Do what works for you, knowing that sometimes you have to do things that you may not like or want to do to achieve your results.
7. Even if you stick to a routine for months, you may never win an Oscar. But be sure you reward yourself for your own accomplishments. Sometimes the satisfaction of sticking to something alone can be your reward.
8. Expect distractions and temptations and those who try to lure you away from your routine: have a plan on how you want to deal with this.
9. Don’t make your routine misery. Life is too short.
10. Make sure your routine includes something you LOVE doing.
