EQ vs. IQ
Sometimes - rather often - the most brilliant people on earth have very limited emotional and people skills. EQ - or emotional intelligence - is the capability of an individual to recognize their own emotions and those of others, discern between different feelings, label them appropriately, and use emotional information to guide thinking, behavior, and manage and/or adjust emotions to adapt to the environment to achieve your goals.
Everyone has a certain set of skills. No one possesses ALL skills. That would be almost inhuman. One of the biggest mistakes we all make is not recognizing our assets, magnifying them, and then offsetting our shortcomings by recognizing them and working around them.
Most successful professionals have outstanding EQ. Their ability to navigate complex situations and emotional people is often what makes them add tremendous value in almost any equation. How often have you thought: "How on earth is this person so successful?" Most times it’s because of high EQ. Emotional intelligence should never be berated as a lesser form of intelligence. Especially in sales or when selling your ideas or wishes.
For those lacking in either EQ or IQ, know that there are solutions. You may never be the master of both, but you can manage the area that needs the most work. Acknowledging it for what it is may be the first step towards a better future.
