With Kobe Bryant’s passing just over a week ago I can’t help but to take some time to reflect on his life and the many people he has impacted directly and indirectly, including myself.
A few days ago I had a friend that I haven’t seen in 5 years stop by my office. The last time we were in the same room together the situation was tense and we didn’t leave on the best terms. We talked about how death has this special way of making disagreements, problems and challenges seem so minuscule, and with Kobe’s passing it made him feel the need to rekindle our friendship.
After chatting for a few hours and catching up on life and all of the successes and failures it has brought us, we began to realize that the disagreement we had years ago no longer mattered. For me, the conversation was a reminder of how great of a friend this person was and the numerous amount of things we have in common along with the countless memories that we share.
As humans, the one thing that we share is the reality that we will all eventually pass on. This should serve to remind us just how short life is. We all leave fingerprints throughout our days on earth. We rarely see fully just how many we leave in our path, and it is for this reason that we should be aware of what we do, what we say, what we accomplish and build and how we make others feel.
So my question to you is what are you going to do today, and every day, to make that inventory of your existence better? What can you do to improve the lives of those around you? You may be amazed how the simplest, easiest words, deeds and gestures can have the greatest impact on others. All it requires is some awareness, empathy and maybe a little selflessness knowing the world is watching and one day you may look back at the many fingerprints you left behind with great pride and feel real achievement, because often it's the little things said and done consistently that matter the most.
