Since coming back home to Merced, one of the biggest things that I have noticed in this real estate world is that Realtors do not like to answer their phone. Emails and texts can be efficient, but even those are not responded to in a reasonable manner.
When I decided to get into real estate years ago my goal was to learn the business at the highest level. To submerge myself with the agents that are the best in the world at what they do. By sheer will and much determination I was fortunate enough to do so. One of the many things that I observed from these highly successful individuals is that they, you guessed it, pick up their phone.
As Realtors, we are the professionals. Our clients have entrusted us to sell their home or help them look for a new one. Whether it be a home for $100K or a home for $10Million, our communication needs to remain impeccable with our fellow colleagues and our clients.
I understand It may be easier to hide behind the safety of an email or text when we get into those messy escrow situations. Who enjoys 'live' confrontation? Human conversations can make those much easier. While emails and texts do allow you to keep a record of conversations, many times tone and inflection are lost and cause problems. A live conversation is usually the best way to communicate clearly and fully. It allows real dialogue and saves you significantly more time. It humanizes issues.
Often, we expect emails to encourage us to pause and react more thoughtfully and purposefully, but the exact opposite is true in our 5-second attention span world. Sometimes people are afraid to say what they really want to say in an email for fear that a written record will come back to haunt them. Usually, email exchanges are prolonged unnecessarily. A human voice possesses miraculous abilities no text or email can ever achieve. It allows you the ability to control the way the 'sound' - not just the content - is delivered. It allows immediate debate and questioning for clarity.
We should all be reminded that we are in the personal and human business and outstanding service has a personal and human element. Let's treat each other more humanely and personally. It will save us all time and aggravation and make our days much more enjoyable.
- Your Agent, Marcus.
