The Best Compliment I've Ever Received

Updated: Mar 5, 2020

Issue no.11

“I can live for two months on a good compliment” – Mark Twain

There’s a saying in many businesses that a referral is the greatest compliment that someone can receive. Being that my business has been solely referral based it would be somewhat silly to disagree with that. But if I set that aside for a minute (probably the amount of time it’ll take you to read this) and truly think about the best compliment I’ve ever received I’d have to take you back to L.A. some years ago.

It was late November and I was a few days away from closing my first multi-million dollar property. I pulled up to this Brentwood home in my embarrassing, but reliable, 2011 Blue Chevy Impala and parked down the street per usual. I slowly rolled up my windows, because that was the only speed they’d go, and turned down my cracked radio that was playing “Gettin’ It” by the prophet Too $hort. I hopped out the car in my $99 downtown LA suit and walked towards the house to meet my client.

Out front I saw an older lady rummaging through items in the garage. Not knowing who she was I introduced myself. She was the daughter of the homeowner who had recently passed away. I followed her into the house where my client was already doing measurements and going over ideas with our interior designer. I step away for a few minutes and strike up a conversation with this older lady. We talked for hours about life, friends, family, her mom and the memories they shared in this home growing up.

At the end of our conversation she looked at me and said, “Your mom did a damn good job raising you. Please tell her that for me.” This may not seem like much, but the sincerity in her eyes and the pureness of those words and how she said them really hit home. I called my mom as soon as I hopped back in that blue Chevy Impala. Her response, “that’s the best compliment I could ever receive.”
